A guided walk exploring the traces of Jewish life in Praga, led by Aleksandra Karkowska-Rogińska. Event organized in cooperation with the Museum of Warsaw's Praga.
“Warsaw’s Praga district has preserved, in a particularly remarkable way, layers of the historic city - surviving urban fragments where the past remains legible in Warsaw’s physical landscape. Owing to the different course of history on the eastern bank of the Vistula, Praga retains numerous examples of its pre-war urban fabric, where traces of former residents endure in the architecture, the thresholds of tenement houses, and the understated details of courtyards.
This walking tour follows the traces of Jewish Praga, offering an opportunity to uncover the histories and micro-narratives embedded in the urban landscape. The route includes, among other sites, the former location of the Praga Synagogue, the historic mikveh, the former Jewish Academic House, and the area of the historic Brukowa Street.
The story of Praga’s former Jewish residents is enriched by excerpts from memoirs - including the Sefer Praga - which evoke the everyday life of a community that helped shape this part of Warsaw for decades.
The tour concludes with a visit to former prayer houses, now incorporated into the Museum of Praga in Warsaw.”
